Heavy rain is expected to hit Istanbul and other regions of Türkiye on Tuesday as showers and thunderstorms spread from the west during the week, while temperatures in the west are forecast to fall below the average for this time of year.

Abdullah Macit, a weather forecast expert at the Meteorology General Directorate under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, commented on the weather expected in the new week.

Rain across west this week

Macit said that, according to the latest assessments, showers and thunderstorm passages are expected throughout the week starting from the western parts of the country.

He said rain will be effective tomorrow in western Marmara (the northwestern region that includes Istanbul), coastal Aegean and the western Mediterranean.

Macit said the rain is expected to be heavy especially in Izmir, Mugla, Aydin and western Antalya, and locally very heavy and severe around Mugla and Aydin.

Saying the rain will continue on Tuesday, Macit stated: “On Tuesday, we expect heavy rain in the Marmara Region around Canakkale, Tekirdag, Istanbul and Bursa; in southern Izmir, around Antalya and Mugla; and in eastern Adana, around Osmaniye and Hatay. On Wednesday, we also expect the rain to be heavy around Antalya and Mugla. We ask our citizens to be careful against floods and water inundation.”

Cooler temperatures for major cities

Noting that temperatures will also fall with the rain, Macit said temperatures will stay below seasonal norms in the west throughout the week, and around or locally above seasonal norms in the east.

He said that the wind will blow strongly and locally as a brief storm from the south on the southern Aegean coast tomorrow and on Tuesday from the north in northern and southwestern Marmara and from the south in eastern Central Anatolia (the interior of Türkiye).

“We expect the rain in Istanbul on Tuesday to be heavy. Flooding and water inundation may occur. We are warning our citizens about this. The temperature will drop to 15 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, then be around 19 degrees Celsius on the following days,” Macit said.

Noting that showers and thunderstorms will be effective in Ankara from Tuesday, Macit said temperatures will decrease and locally fall below seasonal norms.

Macit said thunderstorms expected to be strong, especially in the southern districts of Izmir, will continue for the first three days of the week.
