Following heavy rainfall in the region, the water level of Uluabat Lake has risen by nearly 5 meters, reaching the walls of homes and shops along the waterfront of Golyazi, a historic village famously known as “Little Venice.”

The sudden rise has transformed the usual landscape, reconnecting the island-like part of the village to the mainland with a newly submerged bridge.

Uluabat Lake, one of Türkiye’s richest freshwater ecosystems, supports a diverse population of fish, birds, and other wildlife. After periods of drought and environmental challenges, the lake has revived with the recent rains, filling its shores and breathing new life into the surrounding environment.

The rising waters highlight the ecological and scenic value of this Ramsar-protected area.

The bridge linking Golyazi’s peninsula to the mainland, which has often remained dry in recent years, is now fully under water. Kayaks and small boats navigate beneath it, creating a striking scene reminiscent of Venice.

The submerged roads, trees, and pathways have turned the village into a living postcard, attracting photographers and nature lovers alike.

Golyazi’s landscape changes dramatically with the water levels. As locals say, “When the water rises, Golyazi becomes an island; when it recedes, it turns into a peninsula.” This seasonal transformation adds to the village’s charm, offering visitors a dynamic, ever-changing environment where nature and human settlement meet beautifully.

The rising waters are creating new opportunities for tourism. Visitors can paddle through the streets by kayak, explore the waterfront, and photograph reflections of the surrounding natural scenery. Local shop owners report that the water brings extra charm to the village and expect an increase in visitors this season.

A local resident, explained that this year’s water levels are the highest since 2014, and the visual effect on the village is remarkable.

The nickname “Little Venice” is not just a tourist slogan, it reflects the seasonal rhythm of the village. Water levels fluctuate with rainfall, and this ebb and flow shape both daily life and visitor experiences.

Historical buildings along the shore take on a different character when the lake rises, and the area becomes an outdoor stage for photography, boating, and quiet walks along partially submerged streets.
