Huseyin and Fatma Kostu, who live in a village house at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Sumbas district of Osmaniye, have faced life’s hardships together for 57 years.
Osmaniye is a province in southern Türkiye, near the Mediterranean coast.
Huseyin Kostu, 77, and Fatma Kostu, 75, were born in Ciceklidere village and married in 1969.
The couple moved into the mud-brick house that Huseyin Kostu’s grandfather built in 1915 and raised their five children there.
The village lies an hour away from the nearest settlement. The couple produces honey from 20 beehives and grows vegetables and fruit in their gardens.
They bake their bread in a clay oven and earn a living from an old-age pension and income from the products they sell. Their children are married, and they have 13 grandchildren.
Huseyin Kostu told Anadolu Agency (AA) that he kept living in the house where he was born after getting married.
Saying he loves village life, Kostu said: “When I go down to the district or the city, my soul feels stifled.”
He said he sometimes visits his grandchildren in Adana but prays not to die away from the village and wants to return straight away. Kostu said the couple is content with their home and way of life and that he lives a happy life hand in hand with his wife.
Fatma Kostu said the couple has faced every difficulty together for 57 years.
She said they do not shop at markets or bazaars and produce much of what they consume without pesticides or fertilizers.
