Nestled in the northeastern region of North Macedonia, the village of Kuklica in Kratova is home to an awe-inspiring geological site known as the "Petrified Wedding." With over 120 naturally formed rock pillars, the area attracts visitors from around the world. These unique formations, reminiscent of Türkiye's famous Cappadocia fairy chimneys, stand as silent witnesses to a dramatic tale passed down through generations.
According to local folklore, a young man promised to marry two women on the same day. After scheduling both weddings simultaneously, he was caught by one of the brides. In her fury, she cursed everyone present at the ceremony, turning the groom, both brides, and all the guests into stone. This story has survived the test of time, adding a mystical layer to the geological wonder.
While the locals know them as "Petrified People," scientists explain that these striking rock columns were formed over millions of years through erosion and volcanic activity. Stojna Dimitrovska Booth, a member of the Kratova-based Izvor Association, has been taking care of the site for over 20 years. According to Booth, the formations have a history dating back 10 million years, originating from a volcanic landscape.
The site has become one of North Macedonia’s most visited destinations, drawing tourists from Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. Booth notes that interest in the Petrified Wedding continues to grow, with visitors captivated by both the geological and mythical aspects of the site.
Local tourist Borco Tocev, who visited the site with his family, highlighted the striking similarity between the Petrified Wedding and the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia in Türkiye. "I believe Turkish tourists would love this place," Tocev said, emphasizing the shared history and cultural connections between the two regions.
To promote the area, local organizations continue to organize activities, and there is a call for more support from the North Macedonian government. With its natural beauty and captivating legend, Kuklica’s Petrified Wedding remains a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
