A baby rabbit rescued from a cat by a cafe employee in Elazig has become the mascot of a municipality-owned cafe, drawing interest from visitors.
Yakup Kus, a staff supervisor at a cafe located in the Martyr Fethi Sekin Recreation Area, rescued the newborn rabbit approximately six months ago after noticing a cat attempting to prey on it.
Kus intervened and removed the rabbit from the cat’s mouth.
Due to injuries caused by the incident, Kus initially cared for the rabbit at the cafe for several days. He later returned it to the area where its mother and other rabbits were located. However, the rabbit followed Kus back to the cafe and did not leave the premises.
Kus subsequently decided to adopt the rabbit and named it “Tombis.”
“Tombis,” whose name comes from a Turkish word meaning chubby and cute, has become the cafe’s mascot.
Since then, Kus has been caring for the animal, feeding it fruits and greens, including oranges, pomegranates and leafy vegetables.
The rabbit now moves freely among the tables at the cafe and has become accustomed to human interaction.
Tombis has formed a strong bond with both the cafe staff and customers and prefers staying inside the cafe rather than joining other rabbits in the recreation area.
Tombis has attracted significant attention from visitors, with many customers reportedly visiting the cafe specifically to see the rabbit.
Some customers say the animal adds a warm and friendly atmosphere to the venue.
Customer Sena Yildirim said she frequently visits the cafe to see Tombis, describing the rabbit as “very cute” and praising Kus for rescuing it.
