Sanliurfa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Kasim Gulpinar announced that the city has been officially designated as a candidate for the “2029 World Gastronomy City” by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT).

The decision follows a formal evaluation by IGCAT, which operates in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and UNESCO.

Recognition of culinary heritage

Speaking at a press conference at the Cumhuriyet Gastronomy Center, Mayor Gulpinar highlighted Sanliurfa’s historical, cultural and culinary heritage. He emphasized that the city’s communal dining traditions, production areas, and culture of sharing, particularly the "Halil Ibrahim Table" tradition, were key factors in the nomination. “This enduring heritage places Sanliurfa in a unique position in global gastronomy,” he stated.

Mayor Gulpinar announced that a comprehensive Gastronomy Strategy and Action Plan will be prepared to promote Sanliurfa’s gastronomic heritage internationally and support the growth of high-quality gastronomic tourism. He underlined that the title should be leveraged to create tangible value for the city through strategic promotion and preparations leading up to 2029.
