Severe winter weather has continued to disrupt daily life across large parts of Türkiye, with heavy snowfall and icy conditions leading authorities to suspend education in several provinces and districts.
According to meteorological assessments, the snow that has been affecting the country since the first days of January is expected to continue, prompting precautionary decisions for Monday, Jan. 5.
Local administrations announced that schooling would be paused mainly in rural areas and within the scope of transported education, a system used to bus students from remote villages to centralized schools, to reduce safety risks linked to road conditions and extreme weather.
In Diyarbakir, adverse weather led officials to halt transportation for education in five districts: Kulp, Sur, Ergani, Hani, and Lice. In addition, education was suspended in one school in Hani and in two schools located in rural neighborhoods of Lice, reflecting concerns over accessibility and student safety in outlying areas.
A similar decision was taken in Batman province, where intense snowfall and the risk of icing affected the rural parts of the Kozluk district. Authorities announced that education would be paused for one day in village, town, and hamlet schools, as well as for students covered by transported education, while schools in the district center would remain open.
In Malatya, transportation education was suspended for one day in the districts of Kale, Puturge, Darende, Yazihan, and Kuluncak. District governorates shared the decision through official social media accounts, while the provincial governor’s office clarified that schools in the city center would continue operating as normal.
Further south, Kahramanmaras authorities announced that transportation of education would be paused for one day in the districts of Onikisubat, Turkoglu, and Pazarcik. The decision was framed as a preventive measure against possible disruptions and safety risks linked to travel under winter conditions.
In Sanliurfa, education was suspended in rural neighborhoods across seven districts, including Eyyubiye, Haliliye, Karakopru, Siverek, Viransehir, Hilvan, and Bozova. The provincial administration confirmed that the pause would apply only to rural areas, where weather conditions were more severe.
In the northeastern province of Sirnak, authorities took broader action in the Beytussebap district. Following heavy snowfall, officials cited icing and avalanche risks and announced that all public and private educational institutions would be closed for the day to safeguard students, teachers, and school staff.
