Wet and wintry conditions are set to dominate the forecast across Türkiye through the weekend, ranging from persistent rain across the north, interior and western regions to significant snow accumulations in the east.

Meteorology expert Fevzi Burak Tekin, speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) on behalf of the Turkish State Meteorological Service under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, said a large part of the country will remain under widespread precipitation. He indicated that rainfall will mainly show up as rain or showers in the north, interior, and west, while the eastern regions will, at times, shift over to sleet and snow.

Wednesday brings heavy snow to parts of eastern Türkiye

On Wednesday, precipitation will cover the Aegean, the Mediterranean, most of Central Anatolia except Eskisehir, inland parts of the Western Black Sea region, the Eastern Black Sea, and the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions.

Alongside this, Hatay, Adana and Osmaniye are expected to see heavy rain and showers, while Batman, Siirt, Diyarbakir, Van, Hakkari and Sirnak are forecast to face strong sleet, with heavier snow at higher elevations.

Flooding, wind and travel disruption risks highlighted

Tekin urged people to stay alert for rapid flooding and waterlogging, strong winds during rainfall, and possible disruptions to transportation. In areas seeing snow, he also warned against icing and frost, which can build up quickly and affect roads.

Looking to Feb. 12, precipitation is expected across almost the entire country, except for Trabzon, Rize, Artvin, Ardahan, and surrounding areas. He noted that rainfall will become strong along the Coastal Aegean and across the wider Mediterranean region, as well as in southern and western parts of Eastern Anatolia. He added that the Coastal Aegean, the eastern parts of Antalya, and the western parts of Eastern Anatolia may see very strong, locally severe rainfall.

He also warned that winds on Feb. 12 are expected to pick up from the south across the Aegean, inland parts of the Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, and inland parts of the Black Sea region, with locally very strong winds in western areas.

Feb. 12 keeps rain going, with severe downpours

Precipitation is expected to continue on Friday across Türkiye, except forthe coastal parts of the Eastern Black Sea region. He indicated that rain will remain strong around the Northern Aegean coast, the Southern Aegean, much of the Mediterranean region, western Central Anatolia, inland parts of the Western Black Sea, and western parts of Eastern Anatolia, adding that the Southern Aegean and the Mediterranean region could face very strong, locally severe rainfall.

Tekin said air temperatures are expected to run above seasonal norms across the country throughout the week.

Outlook for Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir

For the capital Ankara, he said light showers are expected from Wednesday afternoon, with rain continuing on Feb. 12-13.

In Istanbul, he said Wednesday will be partly cloudy, followed by rainy conditions on Feb. 12-13.

In Izmir, he said no rain is expected on Wednesday, but heavy rainfall is forecast on Thursday and Friday.
