A new food trend is gaining popularity in Berlin: the strawberry doner. The dish's producer plans to expand sales to German cities with large Turkish communities.
The strawberry doner was created by Karl's Erlebnis-Dorf, a theme park west of Berlin that describes itself as an "experience village." Long queues have formed at the stand selling the item. According to the park, the sandwich combines the savory spice of a classic doner kebab with fresh strawberry flavor.
The strawberry doner is available with chicken, beef or vegetarian fillings, along with strawberries, salad and a homemade sauce. It launched on April 5 at a new restaurant in Elstal, in the German state of Brandenburg, run by Karl's Erdbeerhof, the agricultural company that operates the park.
The park also sells strawberry-topped burgers and novelty items such as toilet-themed ice cream, as well as themed restaurants, including a "burger circus" and "sausage village." Strawberry-based products, including mustard, soap and coffee, are sold on-site as well.
Karl's Erlebnis-Dorf began as a strawberry farm before expanding into an amusement park in recent years. Company plans call for selling the strawberry doner soon at another of its locations, in Oberhausen, in Germany's Ruhr region, an area with a large population of Turkish origin.
The strawberry doner is not the first fusion take on the doner kebab in Germany. Berlin restaurants also offer a truffle-mushroom version, while a doner made with octopus is sold in the southern city of Karlsruhe.
