The sun-dried delicacy from the Aegean region outscored rivals from France, Italy, Greece, and the United States to claim the top spot on the prestigious gastronomy platform’s global fig ranking.
Türkiye’s reputation as a top food producer grew even stronger when TasteAtlas, a well-known food platform, gave the Aydin Fig the highest rating among the world’s best figs. It scored 4.4 out of 5, beating all other international varieties.
TasteAtlas, known for highlighting traditional foods from around the world, ranked the Aydin Fig as number one on its new list of the top ten figs. The platform praised its high fiber, unique aroma, and sweet flavor. Two Italian and two French varieties also made the top ten.
3. Syka Vavronas Markopoulou — Greece | Score: 3.7
This traditional dark burgundy fig comes from the Markopoulo region of Attica and is valued for its strong aroma. According to Greek legend, Persian King Xerxes sought to conquer Greece, in part, for its famous Attic figs. People enjoy these figs fresh or as jam.
2. Black Mission Fig — USA | Score: 4.0
Franciscan missionaries first brought this dark purple-to-black fig to California in 1768. Grown in the San Diego area, it is America’s most popular fig. Its flesh is soft and honey-flavored, and you can find it fresh or dried.
1. Aydin Fig — Türkiye | Score: 4.4
These figs grow in the fertile valleys of the Buyuk Menderes river basin in Türkiye’s Aegean province of Aydin. For centuries, they have been the region’s most valued crop, and now they are ranked number one in the world. Harvested at the end of August, Aydin figs are sun-dried, making them chewy, naturally sweet, and rich in fiber and fructose. People often eat them at breakfast with muesli or use them as a filling in Turkish pastries.
This recognition will not surprise anyone who knows Turkish cuisine, where the Aydin fig has always been highly valued. TasteAtlas has simply made its reputation official and shared it with the world.
