Thunderstorms to bring 2-day relief from heat in Istanbul

Istanbul is set for a two-day break from summer heat as thunderstorms move into the city.

According to the latest assessment from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS), heavy showers accompanied by thunder are expected on Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures in Istanbul are forecast to hover around 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday, with rain expected to affect the entire Marmara region, northwestern Türkiye, and the western Black Sea coast, northern Türkiye.

Showers along the Black Sea coastline may continue into the weekend, according to the forecast.

Today, partly cloudy to very cloudy conditions are expected across the southern, central and eastern parts of the country.

Intermittent showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the interior of the western Mediterranean, southwestern Türkiye, the eastern Mediterranean, southern Türkiye, the northern and western sections of eastern Anatolia, eastern Türkiye, the eastern part of Samsun province (northern Türkiye), and Ordu (northern Türkiye) and the eastern Black Sea region, northeastern Türkiye.

Rainfall is expected to be locally heavy along the coastal areas of Hatay, southern Türkiye, as well as around Artvin, northeastern Türkiye, Erzurum, eastern Türkiye, Kars, northeastern Türkiye, and Ardahan (northeastern Türkiye) from midday onward.

TSMS has issued yellow-coded weather warnings for Erzurum, Kars, Ardahan and Hatay provinces as a result.

Strong winds from the north are also expected in the southwestern Marmara region, northwestern Türkiye, and the northern Aegean, western Türkiye, according to the forecast.
