Turkish celebrity chef and MasterChef judge Somer Sivrioglu’s Anason restaurant in Sydney, Australia, has been placed under administration over a reported AU$2.06 million (over $1.4 million) tax debt, according to Turkish newspaper Sozcu.
The restaurant, which Sivrioglu opened in 2015, reportedly owes the Australian Taxation Office approximately ₺72.4 million (AU$2.06 million).
Sivrioglu said the restaurant had been struggling with serious financial difficulties for nearly five years and that previous applications for small-business debt restructuring had been rejected.
Following those rejections, the chef submitted another application proposing a 30-month repayment plan to settle the outstanding tax debt. However, he said the business had not received a response for more than four months.
Despite the appointment of an administrator, Anason continues to operate in Sydney.
Sivrioglu also maintained that the restaurant had no outstanding payments to employees, suppliers or other creditors, emphasizing that its financial obligations were limited to the Australian Taxation Office.
The restaurant remains operational as the chef seeks to resolve its tax liabilities.
