The Turkish comedy series "Tuzlu Kahve," or "Salty Coffee," used artificial intelligence to show three of its lead characters as young people in a wedding flashback that drew wide attention on social media.

The scene aired Tuesday in the show’s seventh episode on Star TV.

It shows the younger selves of Taylan, Sitare and Tiraje Kutaygil, played by Enis Arikan, Nevra Serezli and Nergis Kumbasar. The younger versions were created with AI, and the flashback goes back to the family’s past.

Earlier episode, same technique

It was not the first use of AI in the series. In the fifth episode, a flashback to the past of the character Murat Aydinoglu, played by Sarp Apak, shows him with a noticeably different appearance as a bald, heavier version of himself.

Later, it was revealed that the image was AI-generated. In that scene, the actor’s face was kept, while the character’s earlier appearance was created digitally.

The wedding scene suggests the production is continuing to use the technique as a storytelling tool in scenes set in the past.

Producer Polat Yagci has said the series aims for the feel of an old-style family comedy and that the team gives a nod each week to earlier productions and veteran performers. The flashbacks form part of that nostalgic approach.
