Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reportedly declared Giuseppe Finocchiaro, the dismissed principal of Istanbul’s Private Italian High School (Liceo Italiano IMI), “persona non grata” following an investigation carried out by the Ministry of National Education.
Türkiye daily, citing a report by Mahmut Ozay, said the decision came after the Education Ministry removed Finocchiaro and deputy principal Nida Intiba from their positions. Their authority to sign official documents on behalf of the school was also canceled.
A foreign official declared persona non grata (unwelcome person) is banned from entering or remaining in a host country.
The investigation was launched in connection with the dismissal of teachers who belonged to the Tez-Koop-Is labor union.
Unionized teachers at the school had previously carried out a strike lasting 123 days. The industrial action wrapped up on June 4 after the sides signed an agreement.
However, the school later terminated the employment of 10 staff members, setting off a public debate and prompting the Education Ministry to look into the dispute.
Following the Education Ministry's decision to remove the two administrators, the Foreign Ministry reportedly took further action by designating Finocchiaro as persona non grata.
