The famous "heart-shaped lake" located in the Dalyan village of Türkiye's northwestern Canakkale province captures attention after its waters underwent a dramatic seasonal transformation, shifting completely into vibrant shades of pink and crimson.
Nestled within the historic inner harbor of the ancient city of Alexandria Troas near the Aegean coastline, this unique saline body of water naturally alternates between regular clear tones, deep brick red, and bright pink depending on the specific time of the year.
Although the striking coloration typically establishes itself earlier in the season, local environmental experts noted that this summer's color change occurred with a significant delay because the region experienced its heaviest rainfall in the last 13 years just last month.
The distinct pink and reddish palette is driven entirely by the rapid proliferation of Dunaliella salina, a microscopic green microalga that thrives in hyper-saline environments and produces red carotenoid pigments to protect itself as summer temperatures and salt concentrations soar.
Due to the rapid evaporation caused by the summer heat and the subsequent fluctuation of internal water levels, the shrinking perimeter of the lake periodically molds itself into a highly distinct, photogenic heart shape that draws visitors from all over the country.
The natural spectacle shifts continuously through autumn, with the most intense pink and magenta tones usually peaking throughout September before transitioning as the climate cools down.
During the late winter months of November and December, the water usually settles into a muted mustard yellow appearance, though unexpected day-to-day temperature spikes can instantly trigger the algae and cause the lake to flash pink again.
