The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced Saturday that 13 suspects were detained across seven provinces as part of an investigation into allegations of vote tampering during the main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) 38th Ordinary Congress.
Simultaneous operations were carried out in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaras, Kilis and Malatya, with authorities conducting search and seizure procedures at identified addresses.
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said the investigation concerns allegations of interference aimed at influencing delegates’ voting preferences during the CHP congress.
The statement said the operation followed work carried out by the Financial Crimes Investigation Department of the Istanbul Police.
“As a result of the work carried out by the Financial Crimes Investigation Department of the Istanbul Provincial Police Department, 13 suspects assessed to have committed the crimes of violating the Political Parties Law, accepting bribes and laundering assets derived from criminal activities were detained,” the statement said.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
The detentions come amid an escalating legal dispute surrounding the CHP’s internal leadership process.
On Thursday, Ankara’s 36th Civil Chamber of the Regional Court of Appeals ruled that CHP leader Ozgur Ozel and the party’s executive administration be provisionally removed from office as part of an ongoing case challenging the validity of the party’s 2023 congress.
As an interim measure, the court ordered former CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu and the party administration in place before the Nov. 4-5, 2023, congress to reassume control until a final ruling is issued.
The court also annulled the Oct. 8, 2023 CHP Istanbul Provincial Congress and all decisions adopted during that meeting.
The ruling stated that the party should revert to its pre-congress structure pending the outcome of the case.
