Turkish main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Ankara Provincial Chairman Umit Erkol was taken into custody in Ankara as part of an investigation into a cooperative in Izmir, authorities said Thursday.

Several individuals affiliated with the Gaziemir Housing Construction Cooperative were also detained during an operation carried out in the early hours of Thursday, according to reports.

Erkol to be transferred to Izmir

CHP Deputy Chairperson Gul Ciftci said Erkol would be taken to Izmir, where the investigation is being conducted.

Erkol was elected Ankara provincial chairman at the CHP’s 38th Ordinary Provincial Congress in 2023.

He was re-elected to the position at the party’s 39th Ordinary Provincial Congress in 2025.
