Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will pay an official visit to Moscow on June 16-17 at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, where he is expected to hold talks on bilateral relations and key regional issues, diplomatic sources said.

According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, Fidan is scheduled to be received by Russian President Vladimir Putin and meet with Lavrov and other senior Russian officials. He is also expected to hold discussions with members of the Turkish business community operating in Russia.

During the meetings, Fidan is expected to underscore the strategic importance of Türkiye-Russia relations for regional stability and prosperity while discussing bilateral issues including trade, energy, security and consular affairs.

Ukraine, Black Sea, Middle East to top agenda

The Turkish foreign minister is expected to reaffirm Ankara’s commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, reiterating that Türkiye stands ready to host another round of negotiations between the two sides, as it did in 2022 and 2025.

Fidan is also expected to warn that rising tensions in the Black Sea pose risks to regional and global security and emphasize that Türkiye’s proposal for a ceasefire covering maritime navigation, energy infrastructure and ports remains on the table.

Developments in the Middle East are also expected to feature prominently in the talks. Fidan is set to reiterate Türkiye’s support for lasting peace between the United States and Iran and stress the importance of restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

On Syria, he is expected to highlight the need for continued international support for the Syrian government to promote stability, security and reconstruction.

Fidan is also expected to criticize Israel’s regional policies, arguing that its actions threaten security and stability across the Middle East, while calling for an end to ceasefire violations in Gaza, the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank and Israel’s military presence in Lebanon.

He is further expected to express Ankara’s support for the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, saying that lasting stability in the South Caucasus would benefit both Türkiye and Russia.

Trade, tourism and energy cooperation remain key pillars

Türkiye and Russia maintain institutional cooperation through the High-Level Cooperation Council established in 2010.

Bilateral trade reached $49.08 billion in 2025, with Turkish exports totaling $6.7 billion and imports from Russia amounting to $42.3 billion.

Tourism remains a key pillar of economic ties, with more than 6.9 million Russian visitors traveling to Türkiye in 2025. The two countries also continue cooperation on the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project, with the first reactor expected to begin operations later this year.
