Torrential rain that has fallen nonstop in Sakarya since Monday morning flooded homes, businesses and farmland, closed roads and left vehicles stranded.
Downpours in the morning hours left puddles on streets across the city, while floodwater covered some underpasses and agricultural fields.
Yavuz Selim Avenue in the Erenler district was closed to vehicles. Traffic units rerouted drivers to alternative routes, while residents tried to clear the water with their own means.
Several creeks burst their banks in Kaynarca district. Water inundated the basement of a house and an unused poultry farm in the Buyukyanik neighborhood, and puddles built up on roads in the Yenikoy neighborhood. Bystanders helped rescue a motorist stranded in rising water.
Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality said rainfall reached about 100 mm in some areas, while 225 vehicles and 560 personnel continue working in the field.
It added that representatives of relevant units and institutions coordinate fieldwork at the Disaster Coordination Center under an "emergency" code due to heavy rain.
The governor's office noted in a social media post that very heavy thunderstorms are expected in places across the province and its surroundings on Tuesday based on the latest assessments from the General Directorate of Meteorology.
Citing risks of floods, waterlogging, lightning and landslides, the post urged residents to stay cautious against possible problems.
