Istanbul braces for heavy snowfall from 6:00 a.m. local time (GMT+3) on Monday, Jan. 12, after severe winds and intense rainfall gripped the city over the weekend, local authorities said.

According to the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center's (AKOM) weekly weather forecast, rain showers will intensify over the weekend and transition into snow as a cold air mass moves in from the Balkans, pushing temperatures down to 2–3 degrees Celsius (35.6–37.4 degrees Fahrenheit) from around 10 degrees Celsius.

Cold front brings storms to Istanbul before skies begin to clear

AKOM stated that most of the city would be affected by sleet, with higher elevations such as Arnavutkoy, Beykoz, and Cekmekoy expected to see snow earlier.

It added that a cold front arriving from the central Mediterranean is likely to create unstable weather patterns, including storms and heavy downpours across the Marmara region.

The city’s weather is expected to gradually settle after Monday’s snowfall. Skies will turn partly cloudy on Tuesday, Jan.13, with mostly cloudy conditions on Wednesday. From Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 15 to 17, the forecast calls for a mix of clouds and clear skies. While Monday’s snow may be heavy at times, no major disruptions are expected later in the week.

Cold wave, storms sweep across Istanbul over weekend

Over the past weekend, Istanbul faced strong winds and heavy rainfall. In response, over 4,100 municipal workers and 1,651 vehicles were deployed citywide under AKOM’s coordination to manage storm-related incidents and prepare for worsening conditions.

By Sunday evening, AKOM had shifted its focus to the incoming cold wave, with relevant municipal departments placed on high alert, including emergency services, fire brigades, parks, waste management, transportation, and infrastructure agencies.

At least 82 weather-related incidents were reported to municipal authorities, including fallen trees and collapsed roofs.
