Istanbul’s Governor’s Office has issued a public warning ahead of severe weather expected to hit the city from Jan. 10 through Jan. 14, urging residents to stay cautious and prepared.
The warning follows updated forecasts from Türkiye’s national meteorological service indicating a strong cold front moving in from the southwest.
The weather forecast expects skies to remain mostly cloudy throughout the period, with a high likelihood of intermittent showers on Saturday afternoon between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. local time (GMT+3), followed by thunderstorms through 7 p.m. on Saturday.
In its statement, the Governor’s Office said the wind may occasionally reach storm strength.
The advisory urged caution over potential incidents such as falling trees and utility poles, damage to rooftops, gas-related poisoning from stoves and heaters, and possible disruptions to transportation services.
According to the meteorological outlook, Saturday, Jan. 10, will see the heaviest rainfall, with temperatures forecast between 7°C and 9°C (44.6°F to 48.2°F). On Sunday, snowfall is expected as the cold front intensifies, pushing daily temperatures down to between 2°C and 4°C.
Conditions are forecast to worsen on Monday, Jan. 12, with nighttime lows falling below freezing at -1°C, while daytime highs are expected to remain around 6°C. Tuesday will bring some relief, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures rising slightly to between 5°C and 9°C.
The weather alert has also prompted the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to move up the kickoff time for the 2025 Super Cup Final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, two of Türkiye’s leading football clubs. The match, scheduled to take place at Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium, will now begin at 6:45 p.m. local time (GMT+3), earlier than initially planned.
