Turkish authorities have detained an Iranian national at Istanbul Airport after identifying him as a subject of an active Interpol notice linked to multiple criminal offenses.
Officers from the Istanbul Police Department's Airport Branch apprehended the suspect, identified only by his initials R.A., 28, following a routine screening. The arrest was carried out by units specializing in counter-migrant smuggling and border gate operations.
Questioning by the Anti-Migrant Smuggling and Border Gates Branch revealed that Iranian judicial authorities had placed restriction records against R.A. on several grounds, including drug offenses, smuggling, and violations related to visa, residency, and work permits.
Interpol, the international criminal police organization headquartered in Lyon, France, coordinates wanted-person notices, known as Red Notices, among its 196 member countries, enabling cross-border arrests of individuals sought by national judicial authorities.
Authorities confirmed that extradition procedures to return R.A. to Iran are ongoing. No timeline for the process was provided.
