Several major roads in Istanbul will close on Wednesday, July 15, for the "July 15 Democracy and Martyrs Memorial Run" as part of Democracy and National Unity Day events.
The Istanbul Governor's Office announced that the Traffic Inspection Branch of the Istanbul Police Department will enforce the closures between 3 a.m. and 3. p.m. local time (GMT+3).
Traffic restrictions will mainly affect roads leading to the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, one of Istanbul's busiest crossings between the European and Asian sides. The D-100 southbound carriageway at the Besiktas-Sariyer junction and the D-100 northbound carriageway at the Umraniye-Altunizade junction will remain closed throughout the event.
In Besiktas, closures will include access roads connecting Barbaros Boulevard to the Sait Ciftci Bridge, the Sait Ciftci upper overpass, the D-100 southbound at Gayrettepe and Zincirlikuyu, as well as the D-100 northbound toward Sariyer.
On the Asian side, authorities will also shut bridge access points from Beylerbeyi, Kisikli Avenue, Altunizade Junction, and Tophaneli Avenue in Uskudar. Drivers heading between the European and Asian sides are expected to face congestion around the July 15 Martyrs Bridge corridor during the closures.
Those approaching from Besiktas, Zincirlikuyu, Gayrettepe, Barbaros Boulevard, Umraniye, Altunizade, Kisikli and Beylerbeyi are advised to use alternative Bosphorus crossings such as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge or the Eurasia Tunnel, depending on their destination, while following temporary traffic diversions in the affected areas.
The "July 15 Democracy and Martyrs Memorial Run" is one of a series of events held across Turkiye each year to mark the Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorating the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016.
The run forms part of nationwide anniversary ceremonies that also include public gatherings, memorial services, sporting events and other commemorative activities. This year's program marks the 10th anniversary of the failed coup attempt.
The event is expected to draw participants from public institutions, sports clubs and the wider public. Runners will use roads leading to the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, prompting temporary traffic restrictions on both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.
