Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, held a phone call with Türkiye’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, on Tuesday. They discussed bilateral cooperation and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region.

According to a Qatari statement, the two officials reviewed ways to support and strengthen relations between their countries. They also went over the latest regional developments, with a focus on diplomatic efforts and joint coordination aimed at de-escalation and at enhancing security and stability.

Qatar backs diplomatic initiatives

Sheikh Mohammed stressed Qatar’s support for all diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at reaching a solution that ensures “freedom of maritime navigation.” He said such a solution should pave the way for a “comprehensive agreement” that achieves “sustainable peace” in the region.

The statement did not name the specific situation or waterway the two ministers had in mind. It also did not say whether any joint steps or follow-up contacts were agreed.

Focus on bilateral ties

The statement described the discussion of cooperation as covering ways to support and strengthen relations. It gave no details on particular areas of cooperation.

Sheikh Mohammed has held the dual post of prime minister and foreign minister in Qatar since 2023. Fidan has led Türkiye’s diplomacy since June 2023, after previously heading the country’s National Intelligence Organization. Qatar and Türkiye have long maintained close political and security ties, and Türkiye has had a military presence in Qatar since the middle of the last decade.
