Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will receive Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani during his working visit to Türkiye on Thursday, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said.
Shaibani is expected to visit Türkiye as part of ongoing diplomatic contacts between Ankara and Damascus.
According to the sources, Fidan plans to review Türkiye-backed efforts to establish lasting stability and security in Syria and highlight the country’s improving capacity to combat terrorism.
He will also reaffirm Türkiye’s determination to strengthen coordination with Syria in the fight against terrorism.
The talks are set to cover cooperation in areas ranging from the economy and security to social reconciliation and reconstruction, where the two countries have made significant progress since December 2024.
Fidan is set to argue that those ties should now be developed within a more institutional framework and review plans for high-level visits in the coming period.
He will also raise the need to add a parliamentary dimension to bilateral relations after the Syrian People’s Assembly began operating last month as part of efforts to strengthen state institutions.
Another key issue will be the integration of northeastern Syria into the central government, a process that Türkiye closely follows because of its security implications.
Fidan will likely highlight that Israeli policies and actions aimed at disrupting Syria's efforts to establish stability and security are unacceptable.
Fidan will emphasize that Syria must press forward with normalization and reconstruction without being drawn back into regional conflict.
The meeting will also cover Israel’s continuing attacks in Gaza. Fidan is set to call for international efforts to halt the attacks despite an agreement to move to the second phase of the Peace Plan.
He will also underline the importance of ending Israel’s occupation in southern Lebanon, describing it as critical to regional security and stability.
Fidan and Shaibani will discuss diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible and establish lasting peace in the region.
Türkiye supports those diplomatic initiatives, the sources said.
