Turkish intelligence and police captured a Daesh terrorist who was preparing to carry out an attack on New Year's Day, the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) announced Friday.
Ibrahim Burtakucin was apprehended in Malatya in a joint operation conducted by MIT and the General Directorate of Security.
According to security sources, MIT's intelligence work determined that Burtakucin was conducting activities on behalf of Daesh in Türkiye, was seeking opportunities to travel to conflict zones to join the terrorist organization, and was preparing an attack in Türkiye on the New Year on behalf of Daesh.
"Burtakucin was found to be in contact with numerous Daesh sympathizers both inside and outside Türkiye," the sources said.
MIT's sensitive operations determined the terrorist's current location, and he was captured in Malatya through joint work with the General Directorate of Security.
Digital materials belonging to the suspect and banned publications found in his home were seized.
Examinations of the materials belonging to Burtakucin revealed Daesh software, images of Daesh flags and banners, audio files used by Daesh for motivation purposes in suicide bomber and "fedai" attacks that support joining Daesh, images and videos of Daesh elements and leaders, and organizational conversations he conducted with Daesh elements.
MIT and the General Directorate of Security said the operation resulted in thwarting Daesh's attack plans targeting Türkiye, exposing Daesh's recruitment of elements, and seizing attack plans.
The capture comes amid a series of counterterrorism operations across Türkiye ahead of New Year celebrations.
Recently, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that 115 Daesh suspects were detained in simultaneous operations across 11 provinces for planning attacks on non-Muslims during Christmas and New Year.
