Turkish Intelligence Organization (MIT) dismantled an international network of agents conducting intelligence operations against Türkiye, authorities said Saturday.

In simultaneous operations carried out across four provinces centered in Ankara, seven individuals, including the network leader identified as B.E., were detained and later arrested.

As a result of intelligence work conducted by MIT, nine individuals involved in an espionage network working for two different foreign intelligence services were identified.

The operation was conducted as part of an investigation coordinated by MIT together with special teams from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the Ankara Police Department’s Counterterrorism Branch.

Two other individuals identified as part of the network were found to already be in prison on separate charges.

The seven suspects were referred to judicial authorities on espionage charges and subsequently arrested.

MIT monitored network through surveillance, cyber tracking

The investigation revealed that B.E. and other members of the espionage network collected sensitive information regarding nongovernmental organizations, associations, ethnic groups and public officials in Türkiye and transferred it to foreign intelligence services.

Suspicious activities by individuals within the network drew MIT’s attention, prompting the launch of a comprehensive intelligence operation.

The activities of B.E. and other members of the organization were systematically monitored through physical surveillance, cyber monitoring and technical wiretapping methods.

Over time, the network’s communication channels with foreign intelligence services, reporting methods, payment mechanisms and operational instructions were fully documented.

B.E. and the network he led reportedly continued their espionage activities for an extended period under the belief that their operations remained secret and under control.

Operation exposed foreign intelligence network structure

Following lengthy intelligence work by MIT, the entire organizational structure of the espionage network, including B.E. at its center, was exposed.

The operation not only revealed the identities of the network members but also uncovered the foreign intelligence service’s network structure, communication protocols and strategic objectives in Türkiye.

Authorities said that the intelligence gathered during the operation both helped protect national security and enabled a detailed analysis of the methods used by foreign intelligence services.
