Turkish police detained nine suspects in Istanbul over alleged illegal ticket sales on social media ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match between Fenerbahce and Liverpool, seizing a handgun, ammunition and digital materials during the operation.
The suspects were taken into custody on Nov. 2 following an investigation into black-market ticket sales for the Nov. 4 fixture, which is scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. local time at Chobani Stadium in Istanbul.
According to Turkish news outlet T24, officers from the Istanbul Police Department's Sports Security and Cybercrime units launched an investigation after receiving information about unauthorized ticket sales for the high-profile match.
Working under the coordination of the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, investigators examined social media activity linked to the alleged sales and identified nine suspects.
Authorities carried out the operation on Nov. 2 after determining that the suspects had violated Law No. 6222, Türkiye's legislation aimed at preventing violence and disorder at sporting events.
Police searched the suspects' addresses as part of the operation and confiscated one handgun, 41 rounds of ammunition and numerous digital materials.
All nine suspects were taken into custody ahead of the Champions League encounter between Fenerbahce and Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
