Ninety universities from Türkiye are placed in at least one academic field in the 2025-2026 World University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), according to results announced by the URAP Research Laboratory.
The laboratory is based at the Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara.
The ranking, designed to highlight universities' strengths and areas for development, evaluated the world's top universities across 78 academic fields based on their performance over the past five years.
Article output, total documents, and citation impact within each field, along with international collaboration measures, formed the core criteria used in the assessment.
Results are set to be published on URAP's website.
A total of 2,566 universities from 121 countries placed in at least one field ranking this year. As in the previous year, China, the United States and India ranked first, second and third, respectively, in university count.
China increased its number of ranked universities to 422 this year, up from 411 in the 2024-2025 ranking. The United States placed 293 universities in the rankings, while India entered with 146.
Türkiye's own count rose to 90 universities this year, up from 89 last year, each placing in at least one academic field.
Of the 78 fields in the URAP ranking, Chinese universities ranked first in 36, while American universities topped 2. The United Kingdom followed with 9 first-place fields and the Netherlands with 5.
Harvard University led global rankings in 19 of the 78 fields, retaining the most first-place finishes worldwide. Tsinghua University of China followed with 15 fields.
The University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, ranked first in 8 fields, while the University of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, led in 4.
At least one university from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia placed in all 78 fields.
Türkiye placed in 48 of the 78 fields evaluated this year. As in the previous year, medicine and health sciences, along with engineering, were the fields with the highest number of Turkish universities ranked.
Eighty-two Turkish universities are placed in the medicine and health sciences field, while 36 are placed in engineering. Twenty-six ranked in biology, 24 in technology, 19 in mathematics, 12 in physics, and 12 in materials science.
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) ranked in 28 academic fields, the most among Turkish universities, followed by Hacettepe University, based in Ankara, with 21 fields. METU ranked in 20 fields, and Yildiz Technical University, in Istanbul, ranked in 19.
They were followed by Ankara University with 17 fields; Gazi University, in Ankara, and Ataturk University, in the eastern city of Erzurum, with 16 fields each; Koc University, in Istanbul, with 15; Istanbul University with 13; Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa with 11; Ege University, in the western city of Izmir, and Firat University, in the eastern city of Elazig, with 10 fields each; Marmara University, the University of Health Sciences and Near East University, in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, with 9 fields each; and Erciyes University, in the central city of Kayseri, and Sakarya University, in northwestern Türkiye, with 8 fields each.
ITU ranked 73rd worldwide in polymer science, 139th in water resources, 141st in marine sciences, 151st in civil engineering, 207th in geology, 223rd in artificial intelligence and 268th in robotics and intelligent systems.
Hacettepe University ranked 116th in dentistry, 129th in pediatrics, and 243rd in education.
METU placed 253rd in energy and fuel, 270th in polymer science, and 291st in civil engineering.
Yildiz Technical University ranked 231st in architecture.
Koc University placed 222nd in political science and 286th in clinical neurology.
Ankara University ranked 103rd in dentistry and 212th in pediatrics.
Istanbul University placed 194th in pediatrics and 215th in dentistry, while Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa ranked 233rd in pediatrics.
Marmara University ranked 204th in pediatrics.
