Türkiye expects negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine to resume before the end of the year, though no specific timeline has been set, a source in the Turkish government told the Russian media outlet RIA Novosti.
The same source separately said Türkiye has not yet received any requests from the parties involved to resume talks in Istanbul.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius discussed bilateral relations and regional and global issues on a phone call on Monday, as the Turkish president noted that Ankara continues to work to ensure the Russia-Ukraine war ends in lasting peace.
"Ankara maintains expectations regarding the resumption of contacts and is ready to support diplomatic efforts on this issue. We expect that the negotiation process on Ukraine will resume before the end of the year," the source told RIA Novosti.
The remarks came after Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian negotiating group and aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, commented on Aug. 19 on the possibility of new talks in Istanbul, saying time would tell whether contacts would resume.
Putin said Aug. 22 that Russia is ready for dialogue on peace with Ukraine, but only on the basis of "realities on the ground."
In a separate report, the same Turkish government source told RIA Novosti that Türkiye has not received any appeals from the parties to resume the Istanbul talks.
"At this time, there are no appeals or actions aimed at resuming the Ukraine talks in Istanbul," the source said.
The source said that, in the absence of such requests, no concrete preparations are currently underway for a new round of talks in Istanbul.
The source added that Ankara remains interested in continuing the negotiation process and has repeatedly stated its readiness to provide Istanbul as a venue for contacts.
Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul resumed in May 2025 following a proposal by Putin for new contacts. Three rounds of talks were held in Türkiye in 2025.
In 2026, contacts continued in Abu Dhabi and Geneva with the participation of U.S. representatives.
