Türkiye ordered the initiation of work in 2023 to establish a Corps Headquarters within the framework of NATO’s Southeast Regional Plan and formally notified NATO of the intention in 2024, the Turkish Defense Ministry said Thursday.
During the ministry’s weekly press briefing, officials provided details about the planned NATO multinational corps headquarters.
“In 2023, our Ministry ordered the initiation of work to establish a Corps Headquarters within the framework of the NATO Southeast Regional Plan, and this intention was declared to NATO in 2024,” ministry officials said.
“In this context, the 6th Corps Command was assigned to meet the requirements of the headquarters planned to be established under the command of a Turkish general, and necessary appointments were made to national core staff,” officials added.
Ministry sources said work to transform the headquarters into a multinational structure is continuing in coordination with NATO authorities, and since NATO procedures have not yet been completed, the approval process is ongoing.
They also stated that the headquarters does not have an officially approved logo, following social media posts circulating images claimed to be the logo of the planned headquarters.
Ministry sources said the mission of the planned Corps Headquarters is to support deterrence and defense activities in its area of responsibility by ensuring the integration of forces allocated to it within the scope of NATO regional plans.
“On the other hand, since the NATO Southeast Regional Plan prepared within the scope of threat assessment had already been approved by the Allies, the planned Multinational Corps Headquarters has no connection with recent developments in our region,” ministry sources added.
