Türkiye’s FM meets UN relief chief to discuss global humanitarian plans

Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met Wednesday with Tom Fletcher, the United Nations’ undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, according to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The meeting took place in Ankara, the ministry said in a post shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal. No further details were provided on the agenda of the talks.

Fletcher highlights Türkiye’s regional role

Following the meeting, Fletcher shared remarks on the X social media platform, describing the talks as constructive.

“Another strong exchange with Foreign Minister @HakanFidan,” Fletcher said, adding that “Türkiye is a pivotal mediator across the region and beyond.”

Humanitarian priorities discussed

Fletcher said the discussions also focused on humanitarian efforts and future planning. He noted that the two sides talked about “plans to save 87m lives in 2026,” without elaborating on specific regions or operations.

The meeting comes amid ongoing humanitarian crises across multiple regions, where Türkiye has played an active role in diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives in coordination with international organizations, including the United Nations.
