Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will attend a ministerial meeting on Jerusalem in Amman on Wednesday, where senior officials will discuss the status of holy sites, developments in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the Gaza ceasefire process and international efforts toward a two-state solution, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.
The meeting will be hosted by Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Eymen al-Safadi.
Senior officials from Türkiye, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Indonesia, Bahrain, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Somalia and Malaysia are expected to attend, along with the secretary-general of the Arab League.
Participants are expected to address the importance of preserving the historical and legal status of holy sites in Jerusalem and related issues.
The meeting will also review developments in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as Israeli practices described as contrary to international law.
Officials are expected to discuss the Gaza ceasefire process, recent developments concerning the Palestinian issue and international efforts to implement a two-state solution.
The parties will also consult on common positions and opportunities for cooperation aimed at strengthening regional peace and stability.
Fidan’s remarks would likely emphasize Jerusalem’s religious, historical and cultural importance to Muslims and underline that protecting the city’s historical and legal status is a shared international responsibility.
His address is also likely to raise concerns over Israeli practices aimed at changing the historical and legal status of Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as settler violence and provocative actions.
Violations targeting Christian holy sites and institutions in Jerusalem may also feature in his speech.
Fidan is likely to highlight the decisions by some countries to move their embassies to Jerusalem, which violate international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
According to the sources, he may also stress that such moves undermine Jerusalem’s internationally recognized status and damage prospects for a two-state solution.
Another point likely to feature in Fidan’s address is concern over attempts to change East Jerusalem’s demographic structure, including the forced displacement of Palestinians and home demolitions.
He may also draw attention to what Türkiye describes as increasingly severe de facto annexation policies and settler violence in the West Bank.
Fidan is also set to call for concrete international action against illegal Israeli practices and demand accountability to ensure these crimes do not go unpunished.
Fidan is expected to highlight Türkiye's constructive contributions toward preparing a roadmap for implementing the Gaza Peace Plan.
He is also expected to state that the process should produce positive results for the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
He will likely characterize continued Israeli attacks on Gaza—despite an agreement on a roadmap for implementing the plan—as unacceptable and deserving of the strongest condemnation.
Fidan may further underline the role meeting participants could play in increasing diplomatic pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom Türkiye accuses of pursuing an expansionist agenda by keeping the region trapped in a cycle of conflict.
The Amman meeting follows a series of phone calls Fidan held with foreign ministers over the past week concerning regional and global crises.
On July 31, Fidan spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan about regional developments and efforts to end ongoing conflicts.
On Aug. 1, he spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about developments in the ongoing negotiation process.
“Türkiye will continue its efforts to end the conflicts in our region and establish a lasting peace,” Fidan said during the call.
On Aug. 3, Fidan discussed regional developments with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
Later that day, he congratulated Zulfikar Zeynula, chairman of the Turkish Democratic Party of North Macedonia, on his appointment as state minister and wished him success in the role.
Fidan also spoke Aug. 3 with Britain’s new Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband.
After congratulating Miliband on his appointment, Fidan discussed the situation in the Middle East, particularly Gaza, developments in the Russia-Ukraine war and efforts to end conflicts in the region.
