Türkiye’s Ambassador to the United States Sedat Onal held talks Wednesday with Sen. Elissa Slotkin in Washington, D.C., the Turkish Embassy said.

In a post on the U.S.-based social media platform X, the embassy said the meeting covered “issues of common interest, bilateral cooperation between Türkiye and the United States, as well as current regional and international developments.”

The two sides also underscored the importance of maintaining dialogue and coordination between Ankara and Washington, the statement said.

No further details were released about the closed-door meeting.

Onal assumed his post in Washington after the end of Murat Mercan’s term, who served as Türkiye’s ambassador to the United States from 2021 to 2024.

Before his appointment, Onal served as Türkiye’s deputy foreign minister from 2018 to 2023, a period marked by heightened tensions in Türkiye-U.S. relations.
