An unmanned maritime vehicle was discovered close to shore in the Carsamba district of Samsun, a city on Türkiye's Black Sea coast, after a local fisherman spotted the object in the water. Gendarmerie and Coast Guard units were dispatched to the scene, and specialist teams were called in to examine the device and determine its origin.

Fisherman spots object near Yali beach

The discovery was made on the coastline of Yali neighborhood, a neighborhood in Carsamba. According to information obtained, a resident of Yali who works as a fisherman, identified as Kazim Baltaoglu, noticed an object in the sea while walking along the shore.

He initially believed it to be a small boat, but on closer inspection determined that it was not, and reported the sighting to gendarmerie and Coast Guard teams.

Following the report, gendarmerie and Coast Guard personnel were sent to the location, where they established a wide security perimeter around the site. Specialist teams were subsequently dispatched to inspect the unmanned vessel and assess what it was.

Origin and purpose remain unclear

The origin of the unmanned sea vehicle and the purpose for which it was used are expected to become clear following further examination.

As of the latest information available, authorities had not yet released findings on the object's source or function.

Samsun sits on Türkiye's central Black Sea coast, a region that has seen heightened maritime activity and periodic reports of drifting military-related debris, including sea mines and unmanned devices, since the escalation of the war between Russia and Ukraine in the wider Black Sea basin.
