Turkish actor and social media personality Mesut Can Tomay was released under judicial control after being detained along with two other suspects in a drug trafficking investigation, according to reports.
Officers from the Şişli District Police Department's public order bureau, operating in Şişli, a district in Istanbul, seized 9.50 grams of a cannabis strain known as skunk on July 25 from a bag left at a residence in the district.
The substance had reportedly been ordered to Tomay's address and hidden inside a natural gas meter cabinet at the home of a friend where Tomay was staying.
On July 26, police learned a person was coming to collect the bag and detained Suleyman C. as he arrived to retrieve it.
Suleyman C. initially told police the bag did not belong to him and that he had been asked to deliver it to Mustafa T.O., a guest staying in room 516 of the same residence.
Officers then detained Mustafa T.O., who said the drugs belonged to actor Mesut C.T. and that he had kept them outside his own room out of fear tied to a broader narcotics investigation reportedly targeting celebrities.
In his testimony to the prosecutor, Tomay said he was the one using the drugs. 'I did this because I feared the drug operation targeting celebrities that had come to public attention,' he said.
Searches of the rooms used by Mustafa T.O. and Mesut C.T. did not turn up any additional evidence, authorities said.
Samples were taken from Mesut C.T., Mustafa T.O. and Suleyman C. at the Forensic Medicine Institute. All three suspects face proceedings on charges of trafficking or supplying narcotics or stimulants and were referred to a criminal court of peace with a request for judicial control.
Tomay was released under judicial control following the process.
