Around 180 members of Iran’s parliament called for the immediate termination of an agreement with the U.S. after President Donald Trump declared the understanding over, according to a joint statement reported by Iran’s Fars News Agency.

The lawmakers urged Iranian authorities to adopt a firm position and follow the foreign policy course set by the country’s leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.

They accused Washington of failing to honor agreements and said Tehran should formally end the understanding because the U.S. administration had declared its obligations terminated.

Iran’s parliament has 290 members.

Lawmakers call for special commission on negotiations

The lawmakers asked the parliament’s presiding board to immediately establish a special commission to review negotiations and agreements.

The proposed commission would also monitor whether conditions set by Iran’s leader had been fulfilled.

The statement referred to the agreement as the Islamabad understanding and said the heads of Iran’s branches of government should announce firm positions after the U.S. president declared it over.

The lawmakers said they expected Iran’s authorities to respond decisively and without delay.

Parliament plans legislation on Hormuz

The statement said parliament would place legal measures on its agenda, including strengthening Iran’s defense doctrine and passing legislation on the management and governance of the Strait of Hormuz.

The lawmakers expressed firm support for Iran’s armed forces, particularly in exercising what they described as the country’s sovereign rights over the strait.

They said parliament would provide full support to meet the needs of the armed forces and would not withhold assistance.

'Revenge and practical action'

The lawmakers also called for those responsible for what they described as recent crimes against Iran to face retaliation.

“In the stronghold of parliament, we pledge that we will not neglect efforts, planning and practical action for even a moment on the path of seeking blood and revenge,” the statement said.

They emphasized the need for concrete steps and said the pursuit of retaliation should remain a priority alongside the termination of the agreement with the U.S.

The statement combined calls for ending the understanding, reviewing negotiations, adopting legislation concerning the Strait of Hormuz and providing comprehensive support to Iran’s armed forces.
