The Algerian police announced the dismantling of one of the most dangerous phishing networks in the country in recent months, led by an individual whom authorities described as highly skilled in carrying out sophisticated cyberattacks.

The Algerian authorities confirmed that they had arrested the individual suspected of involvement in the cybercrimes, noting that he is currently under investigation by the competent authorities.

Details of the case were reported by the Algerian newspaper El Khabar, citing a statement from the Cybercrime Prevention Unit of the Provincial Judicial Police Department.

“The competent authorities arrested a suspect involved in creating phishing websites and hacking accounts through the use of fraudulent links,” the statement said.

The statement added, “The investigation led to the precise identification of the suspect, who carried out no fewer than 140,000 attacks. Investigators also reviewed online articles published by international cybersecurity-focused media outlets that documented the extensive criminal activity of the operator of this platform since 2020.”

After placing the suspect in custody for interrogation, the security unit moved to secure his workplace and seized the digital equipment he had been using in his operations, including a laptop, hard drives and mobile phones.

Cybercrime and its types

Cybercrime, often referred to as cyber offenses, is defined as criminal activity carried out by individuals with expertise in using computers and accessing internet networks with the aim of committing acts punishable by law. These crimes target the interests of individuals, companies and even governments.

Even governments have not been spared from such crimes, despite deploying extensive resources to protect their systems, given the sensitivity of the information they contain.
