Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced he will request that U.S. President Donald Trump pressure Israel to implement a framework agreement and satisfy Lebanon's demands during his upcoming visit to the United States on July 21.
According to a written statement from the Lebanese Presidency, Aoun shared these intentions while hosting a delegation from the board of the Amiliye Association.
He emphasized that the army and the state are the sole forces capable of protecting the Lebanese population, noting that the people in southern Lebanon deserve safety and stability rather than enduring destruction and loss of life.
Aoun said the shared goals of the Lebanese people are Israel’s withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territories, the return of displaced people to their homes, the return of prisoners and bodies, and reconstruction.
“The option of war has failed. Therefore, this process must be tried,” Aoun said.
He stressed that, as president, he would not compromise on southern Lebanon or the country’s rights.
Aoun said Lebanon insists on Israel’s withdrawal from all Lebanese territories and on a commitment that Israel has “no ambitions over Lebanon.”
Aoun said he would raise the issue during his July 21 visit to the U.S.
“I will ask U.S. President Donald Trump to exert the necessary pressure on Israel for the implementation of the points agreed in the framework agreement and Lebanon’s demands,” Aoun said.
He added that he would also ask for Lebanon’s position in the process to be strengthened by benefiting from the current willingness of the U.S. administration to achieve peace in the region.
Lebanon and Israel signed the framework agreement on June 26 in Washington after the fifth round of direct negotiations.
