Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed on Tuesday Sudan’s peace initiative submitted to the U.N. Security Council, calling for positive engagement with it.
In a statement, Aboul Gheit praised what he described as a “comprehensive peace initiative” outlined in Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris’ address to the Security Council, saying it carried “highly important political, humanitarian, and security messages” and provided a serious framework that could be built upon.
Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of engaging with the initiative’s principles on transitional justice, reparations, national reconciliation and non-exclusion, saying they would bolster prospects for lasting peace.
He said the approach would safeguard the unity of society and the state and help prevent a resurgence of violence or a slide toward fragmentation and division.
In his address to the Security Council late Monday, Idris presented an initiative aimed at bringing peace to the country through a comprehensive ceasefire and the disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces.
He said the initiative calls for a Sudanese-led dialogue based on reconciliation and reintegration into society and includes a nationwide ceasefire under regional and international monitoring, the Rapid Support Forces’ withdrawal from all areas under its control, and the regrouping of its fighters in designated camps.
The initiative also includes measures to facilitate the return of displaced people to their areas and refugees to the country and to disarm the Rapid Support Forces under agreed international monitoring, Idris said.
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, with fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces killing tens of thousands and displacing around 13 million people, while deepening what is described as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
