Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis said Friday that strikes on a vegetable market in Taiz province killed 20 people and injured 10 others, while local authorities disputed the claim and accused the Houthis of carrying out the attack.

Houthi Health Ministry spokesperson Anis al-Asbahi said several missiles struck the market in Al-Waziya city, blaming Saudi aircraft for the attack.

“Saudi enemy aircraft targeted with several missiles the vegetable market in Al-Waziya city, resulting in the death of 20 citizens and the injury of 10 others,” al-Asbahi said, according to the Houthi-run Saba news agency.

Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV separately reported that more than 30 people had been killed or wounded in three strikes on the market, describing the figure as preliminary as searches continued for missing people.

Local authorities, however, blamed the Houthis and said “military aircraft did not launch any aerial operations.”

Fighting intensifies in Taiz

The conflicting accounts came amid renewed fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis.

Saudi-backed government forces said they had recaptured the villages of al-Nidani and al-Sarari, large parts of Sanamat district and the Rabat al-Qarn area in Taiz province.

They also said 37 Houthi members had been killed or wounded in the clashes. The Houthis had not immediately responded to the government’s announcement.

Taiz is strategically significant because of its proximity to the Bab al-Mandeb strait, where an average of 4.2 million barrels of crude oil passed each day during the first half of 2025.

Houthis report other attacks

Al Masirah also reported strikes on the Hamdan area of Sanaa that hit two artesian wells, as well as attacks on the Majz district in Saada province.

The channel said artillery and rocket fire also struck the Shada area and other districts along the Saudi border.

Yemen has been engulfed in civil war since the Houthis seized Sanaa and other areas in September 2014. A Saudi-led coalition has supported Yemen’s internationally recognized government since March 2015.
