Bahrain has banned its citizens from traveling to Iran and Iraq until further notice, citing the continued tense security situation in the region, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.
The ministry said the decision was taken to protect national security and the safety of Bahraini citizens.
“Due to the continued tense security situation resulting from the repercussions of the sinful Iranian aggression, and in order to safeguard national security and the safety of all citizens, the Ministry of Interior announces the decision to ban citizens from traveling” to Iran and Iraq, the ministry said in a statement cited by Bahrain’s state news agency BNA.
The Interior Ministry said the travel ban would remain in place until further notice. It added that Bahraini authorities would take necessary steps against violators.
In a separate post, the ministry said the decision came “due to the ongoing tension in the current security situation.”
The announcement follows rising tensions in the Middle East since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran retaliated with attacks targeting Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire took effect April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but later talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.
Since then, the sides have continued exchanging proposals and counterproposals in efforts to resume direct talks and end the conflict.
