Bordeaux Exhibition Centre shelters thousands displaced by Gironde wildfires

The people who evacuated from their homes due to the wildfires in the Gironde region took refuge in the Bordeaux Exhibition Centre on Sunday. The place, which has been converted into a temporary emergency shelter, is taking in up to 7,000 people into its 10,000 sqm facility.

While the wildfires in south France are still continuing, over 200,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the region affected over the weekend, and the Bordeaux Exhibition Centre was the largest temporary shelter for the evacuees.

The facility provides accommodation for families displaced from several municipalities, providing medical assistance, food and psychological support.

On Sunday, France’s interior minister Laurent Nuñez said the situation remained “very unfavourable” with fire crews tackling multiple blazes across mostly forest land. He said 2,500 firefighters and nearly 1,500 military personnel remained deployed.

Railway operator SNCF cancelled all direct trains connecting Bordeaux, the Basque Country and Bearn. In France, a wildfire that erupted on Wednesday in Saumos, Gironde, has consumed 42,000 hectares (103,800 acres).
