The campaign period has begun for political parties and candidates ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s general election on Oct. 4.
As part of the campaign period announced by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Central Election Commission (CIK), posters featuring candidates and political party campaign materials were put up across the country, especially in the capital Sarajevo.
According to information on CIK’s official website, 3,414,364 voters are eligible to cast ballots in the election.
Ten candidates will compete for the Bosnia and Herzegovina tripartite Presidency Council—four for the Bosniak seat, three for the Serb seat and three for the Croat seat.
Twelve candidates will also run for president of Republika Srpska (RS), one of the country’s two entities.
Voters in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will vote for the Bosniak and Croat members of the Presidency Council, while voters in RS will vote for the Serb member.
The election will be the 10th general vote held after the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Voters will elect the Bosniak, Serb and Croat members of the Presidency Council, as well as governments and lawmakers at the cantonal, entity and state levels.
CIK fully or partially approved applications from 75 political parties and four independent candidates to participate in the election.
The commission also allowed 29 coalitions to take part.
General elections are held every four years in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The country’s most recent general election was held on Oct. 2, 2022.
