Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia pledged to work more closely to accelerate their European Union membership processes, strengthen economic ties and deepen regional cooperation during talks in Sarajevo.
Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic met North Macedonian Foreign and Foreign Trade Minister Timco Mucunski, who was visiting the Bosnian capital.
The ministers discussed strengthening bilateral relations, increasing economic cooperation, improving transport connections and coordinating efforts toward EU membership.
At a joint news conference following the meeting, both officials emphasized that Western Balkan countries share an interest in becoming part of the EU and should continue supporting each other through the accession process.
Konakovic said relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia were at a good level but that significant opportunities remained for further progress in trade, investment and infrastructure.
He said the two countries faced similar challenges and shared approaches toward European integration and economic development.
“The European Union’s enlargement process is still alive, relevant and accessible,” Konakovic said. “We should use this for the benefit of the citizens of our countries.”
He said accelerating the EU membership process represented an important opportunity for the entire Western Balkans.
Improving economic conditions could help reduce migration from the region and encourage people living abroad to return, he added.
Mucunski said North Macedonia strongly supported Bosnia and Herzegovina’s goal of joining the EU.
He also reaffirmed his country’s support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“Countries in the region have a common interest in becoming part of the EU,” Mucunski said.
He said regional countries should maintain mutual support and increase the exchange of experience during their respective accession processes.
The two ministers said closer coordination could contribute to faster European integration and stronger regional cooperation.
Konakovic said the two countries had room to expand cooperation in trade, investment and infrastructure despite their positive political relations.
The talks included measures to improve transport links and support stronger economic integration between Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia.
Mucunski also stressed the importance of strengthening economic cooperation and increasing connections between the business communities of the two countries.
Both sides indicated that closer commercial ties and improved transport infrastructure could support economic development and reinforce broader regional cooperation.
