Burning debris rained down near the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday after United Arab Emirates (UAE) air defense systems intercepted incoming missiles and drones launched from Iran, authorities confirmed, as loud explosions were heard across the city.
Witness videos showed interceptor missiles launching into the sky, followed by flaming fragments raining down near the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Loud explosions were heard across multiple parts of Dubai shortly afterward.
Dubai authorities confirmed the sounds were linked to air defense operations.
"Authorities in Dubai confirm that the sounds heard across parts of the city were the result of successful air defense interception operations. Please rely on official sources for updates," the Dubai Media Office said in a post on X.
The UAE Defense Ministry also issued a statement on X, saying its air defense systems were actively responding to threats.
"UAE air defenses are currently responding to incoming missile and drone threats from Iran. MOD asserts that the sounds heard are the result of the Air Defense Systems intercepting missiles and drones," the ministry said.
