U.S. Central Command Commander Adm. Brad Cooper met with YPG/SDF leader Mazloum Abdi in northern Iraq before visiting Syria to ensure implementation of the ceasefire between the Damascus government and the terrorist organization, according to reports.

Al Arabiya television reported that Cooper met with Abdi before traveling to Syria to facilitate ceasefire implementation and address the process of transferring Daesh detainees to Iraq.

The visit also aimed to prevent escalation of tensions between the Syrian government and YPG/SDF.

CENTCOM has not officially commented on Cooper's meetings or Syria visit.

Phone call with Syrian president

Cooper also spoke by phone with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Jan. 21, discussing the importance of Syrian government forces adhering to the ceasefire with the SDF.

During the call, Cooper briefed Sharaa on CENTCOM's plan for an orderly and secure transfer of up to 7,000 Daesh detainees from Syria to Iraq.

Cooper expressed expectations that Syrian forces and all other forces avoid actions that could interfere with the transfer.

The two leaders reaffirmed their continued strong commitment to the enduring defeat of Daesh in Syria, emphasizing that preventing a Daesh resurgence makes America, the region and the world safer.
