The U.S. military said Saturday it used single-use drones in combat for the first time during strikes on Iran.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on X that Task Force Scorpion Strike employed “low-cost one-way attack drones” in the operation.
According to CENTCOM, the drones are expendable and cheaper than traditional missiles.
“These low-cost drones, modeled after Iran’s Shahed drones, are now delivering American-made retribution,” the statement said, referring to the Shahed drones that have been exported from Iran to Russia for use against Ukraine.
Drone technology has gained prominence in the Ukraine-Russia war, where both sides have used flying explosive devices to reduce the need for frontline troops and limit safe positions for enemy forces.
