Commercial and passenger traffic at the Shalamcheh border crossing has been suspended following an airstrike on the Iranian side. The attack killed one Iraqi civilian and wounded five others near the transit point, according to local officials, security sources, and Iranian media.

The closure was announced by Omar al-Waeli, head of Iraq's Border Ports, after the strike targeted the Iranian side of the crossing. Iranian state-run news agency Tasnim reported that one Iraqi civilian was killed in the attack.

Security sources said the airstrikes hit a passenger reception area on the Iranian side of the border crossing and that at least five Iraqis were seriously wounded.

Crossing is key route for travelers between Iraq and Iran

The Shalamcheh border crossing is commonly used by Iraqi and Iranian travelers arriving and departing by land, particularly during holiday seasons and religious pilgrimage periods.

The area also holds historical significance dating back to the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.

During that conflict, the crossing became one of the war's main frontlines. Iraqi forces used it as a key invasion route at the start of the war, and the area witnessed some of the conflict's heaviest and deadliest fighting.

The reports said the latest airstrike on the Iranian side of the crossing killed one Iraqi civilian, wounded five others and prompted Iraq to shut the border point to both trade and passenger traffic.
