The death toll from ongoing U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran has risen to 787, Iran’s Red Crescent said Tuesday.
Search and rescue operations are continuing in the rubble of bombed buildings, the organization said in a written statement cited by the state-run Tasnim News Agency. It did not provide figures for the number of injuries.
The United States and Israel have carried out large-scale attacks on Iran since Saturday, killing several senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and top military officials.
In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and several Gulf countries that host U.S. military assets.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army said Tuesday that its forces launched a ground incursion into southern Lebanon aimed at establishing what it described as a “security zone.”
In a statement, the army said its troops had begun what it called a “forward defense operation for the northern towns.”
“The 91st Division is operating in southern Lebanon and is positioned at a number of strategic points in the area (not specified),” the statement said, adding that the move was part of “strengthening the forward defense system.”
The army said the operation aims to create an additional security layer through large-scale strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure “to prevent infiltration attempts” into Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on the U.S. social media platform X that the operation was approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “to secure additional strategic areas” in Lebanon “to prevent attacks” on northern Israel.
In separate statements issued Tuesday, Lebanon-based Hezbollah said it had targeted three military bases in northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights using rockets and drones.
